The Story     6/07/21

Hi, my name is Kim. I am a 60-year-old female with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high glucose levels. My BMI is 30, and I am considered obese by medical standards. These are the hard realities in my wonderful life.

When I met my husband seven years ago, I told him, “I’m on a journey.” Little did I know that my journey would include him, seven stepchildren (four being 15-, 8-, 6-, and 4-year-old girls), 2 grown sons of my own, 2 dogs, and 2 cats living in a home in far North Dallas.

Pretty ironic, considering the fact, that as our relationship developed from friendship to romance, we had sat across from each other at Truluck’s in Dallas, TX and he asked these questions:

“Kids or no kids?” Answer: No kids. We high fived.

“House or condo?” Answer: Condo. We high fived.

“Pets or no pets?” Answer: No pets. We high fived.

Now my journey has taken another twist. This time it began when I decided to find a doctor to help me understand a thyroid diagnosis.

My first visit did not go as planned. I never saw the doctor that day. Instead, the nurse took my blood pressure four separate times and visited with the doctor in between readings. I was told my blood pressure was at a level that could cause stroke and was sent directly to the closest emergency room.

So here I am. A baby boomer facing, the last phases of my life. If I am going to be there for my aging parents, my husband, my children, and get the opportunity to see my grandchildren; I must make changes. Healthy changes.

Therefore, I must begin the journey of “Healthy at 60”.
