ALGAE WRAPS-DO THEY WORK? 7/12/21

Last Friday I attended a spa appointment for an Algae Body Wrap. These wraps are touted for their health benefits and detoxing. Dr. Bill Sukala says there is no evidence identifying the long-term health benefits or the ability for an algae wrap to detox your body. However...

I arrived at the Nordstrom Spa located in the Northpark Center in Dallas. BTW, if you haven't visited this shopping center, you should because they have an amazing facility filled with gorgeous plants and amazing artwork and sculptures. Quick note: If you haven't visited in quite some time, visit again because the art and plantings change frequently. Anyway, let's get back on track.

Before heading to the spa, I took a shower and washed my hair. Upon arrival the esthetician exclaimed, "Is your hair wet?" I affirmed and she said, “But, why?" I know I appeared a bit sheepish when I replied, "It was dirty, and I didn't want you to have to touch it." Her look softened and she smiled. We agreed upon a scalp massage without the oil.

The esthetician asked me why I had chosen the algae wrap and I explained that I was having some health issues and decided to treat myself to some staycation benefits. Her abilities as an esthetician shown bright as we discussed what was going on with my health and from that moment on, I became "honey bunny". It was so endearing that I felt completely at ease. Her professionalism throughout the process was perfect, explaining every step, expectation, and encouragement to think positive thoughts for healing.

This is a great explanation of why she has been employed by Nordstrom for 11 years, unfortunately furloughed due to the pandemic, but was called back to work. She was one of five that returned to work of the 22 previously employed. The spa is still having to regain traction and it is a reminder of how another sector of trained professionals were negatively impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

By the end of the treatment, I was relaxed and feeling mellow. However, it is the past three days that make me wonder if there is any truth to the benefits of this procedure. Prior to the treatment I had low energy, had to force myself to move, napped daily, and had leg and foot pain nightly. Since the spa experience I feel energized, in no need of naps, exercise easily, have not felt the past routine of pain, and sleep soundly.

I don't know if it has anything to do with the algae wrap, but I am feeling better currently. Maybe it goes back to Dr. Bill Sukala's ending question of "What are your expectations?" The truth is I didn't have any expectations, so even if it is a temporary, short-term, feel good moment...I will gladly take it and feel blessed.

P.S.
